On this day: 57 years ago, company test pilot John Conrad made the maiden flight of the LTV A-7 Corsair II (September 26,1965). Affectedly known as the "SLUF" (Short Little Ugly F*****) the A-7 became Navy’s leading attack aircraft for the 1970s and 80s, and developed into one of the best tactical fighter bombers ever fielded by U.S. forces.
