When a person swings a bat , don't step back impact will hurt if it connects , step in close , so hit with handle of the bat or put them in a bear hug for the least damage from the bat,

Get in close, for a bat to have effect they need to swing so it leaves them open and the good thing is most people swing with both hands, leaving nothing apart from their legs to defend themselves with, and most people don't kick out when they're swinging a bat because they lose their balance...
