View MoreThis is more true than most realize, and the concept extends much farther than just electric cars. Let's do a simple thought expirement. In a pure free market where the individual chooses literally everything they want without restriction. In that system the individual would choose only those things that meet their needs, and only those things that do so most efficiently. Why choose a less efficient option if a more efficient option that meets the desire is available? Now let's imagine a regulation. What do regulations accomplish? What are they for? Their entire purpose is to modify behavior away from what would otherwise be done. So if in a free market the individual would only do that which is least wasteful, and laws modify that behavior. Then laws can ONLY make things less efficient. The more laws there are, the farther from the ideal efficiency that society can ever be. It doesn't matter what the law is or does, it takes away from the society it's values, it takes away choice, and it forces compliance to the wishes of a minority. All regulations, no matter what they do, modify behavior away from efficiency and value. Let's look at an example. Speed limits. On the surface it seems like limiting speed will increase efficiency, however what do speed limits do? They force you to drive slower than you ordinarily would in those conditions. You value getting to your destination faster, more that the cost of the extra fuel it would take to do so. The regulation modifies your behavior to the wishes of someone else who doesn't agree with your values. They don't value your time. They wish to modify your behavior to THEIR wishes, to THEIR values, not yours. The regulation makers don't care about what you want or why, they care only that you comply with their demands. They don't care about the efficieny that you would have gained by less wasted time, they only care that you don't waste more fuel than they wish to allow. To them, gasoline is more valuable than your time, and they claim stewardship of both.
