Every election cycle those politicians who are up for reelection pick a Veteran's issue they can beat to death.
This year's issue is the contaminated water at Camp LeJeune.
Presently there is a bill in the house to grant additional benefits to those Marines and their families who have been adversely affected by the drinking water at Camp LeJeune. Contamination they have know about for decades and have chosen to ignore. Now if this bill manages to make it out of the House where every member is up for reelection it then goes to the Senate where only 1/3 of the members are up for reelection. What that means is that those members of the Senate who are up for reelection will vote for this bill while the other 2/3 of the Senate are free to vote against it. That way come the next election cycle those Senators who vote against it this year will be able to support it during the next election in order to buy votes.
If by some miracle this bill manages to make it through the Congress and is presented to the President for his signature it is most likely Biden will veto it since he is not up for reelection for another 2 years. This raises the question is there enough votes in the 2 houses of the Congress to override a presidential veto. Especially after the election is over. Yes it is highly probable they will stretch this out past the up coming election in order to get votes.
Finally once or if this bill does become law the Department of Veterans Affairs will be authorized to distribute the benefits to those Marines, Civilian employees and their families and not the courts where the government does not control how the benefits are to be dispersed.
