13 Hours is an interesting film. I'm not trying to promote it. I think the film left out some important details.
When I joined the Navy, after I finished Boot and A School, I got 3rd pick overall of the orders on the table. I could have picked shore duty and never set foot on a boat. But I saw a packet of orders that said Sigonella Sicily. I asked about that packet, type of boat, length of deployment, type of deployment,... And ultimately, I picked going to an Oiler that I had to rendezvous with in Sigonella Sicily.
I lived in Sigonella for about two months, on base, at Naval Air Station Sigonella. Planes and boats there every day. That was early 93.
I was just off the coast of Somalia during the Blackhawk Incident. I seem to remember that we witnessed, and participated in Helo refueling and ammo replenishment. And we had support from, Naval Air Station Sigonella.
The official narrative that surrounded Benghazi was that there were no air assets available to get there fast enough. As someone who had seen first hand what Naval Air Station Sigonella was capable of providing, I knew that the narrative was bullshit. A-10s and F18s could have been there on station before the mortars fell.
So when you watch this film again, if you do, know that help could came. It was never sent.
