When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior we become a new creation. Born again. God starts changing us. Some may see some changes instantly but God doesn’t instantly do everything. It’s not like BAM! I’m changed and I don’t need to do anything. No. You have to continually get into God’s word and let him speak to your heart. You will go through trials on your journey but that’s how God changes you.
When I became a Christian, one of the first verses I memorized was:
 2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old has gone and the new has come.
I would run that verse through my mind telling me my old nature/ habits have passed away --are gone --no longer have control of me.
If you read the Amplified:
AMP- 2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life].
As Romans 6:4b says
…just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
But sometimes I feel like I’m not making progress in my spiritual life.  I know I do. When God starts a project, he completes it! Sometimes I just say “God where are you? Why can’t I get this? What’s going on?” But God has his master plan. He knew from the beginning what you would be going through so I have to keep a couple verses going through my head to keep me on track or at least keeping me motivated
Philippians 1:6
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (NIV)
NLT -- And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
Christ is Returning soon. And He is molding shaping us into His Great Army for these end times. We are going to be needed to reach out and bring unbelievers to Christ. As this world spirals downhill a lot of people are going to be looking for answers. Once God starts His work on you He is never done. If He finishes what you might have thought needed worked on or what you have been praying about He just moves on to another thing -- molding shaping you until He is completed which won’t happen till the Return of Christ.
He’s preparing us for His Great Army that will arise in these end times.
1 Corinthians 1:7-8 --- 7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 8 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
From NLT Life Application: Phil 1:6- Do you sometimes feel as though you aren’t making progress in your spiritual life? When God starts a project, he completes it! As with the Philippians, God will help you grow in grace until he has completed his work in your life. When you are discouraged, remember that God won’t give up on you. He promises to finish the work he has begun. When you feel incomplete , unfinished, or distressed by your shortcomings, remember God’s promise and provision. Don’t let your present condition rob you of the joy of knowing Christ or keep you from growing closer to him.
Ephesians 2:10
For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].
