Some remember, some don't. Instead of talking about the socialism and authoritarianism occurring today, it might be more prudent to contemplate what worked in our past. When we built things, instead of tearing them down in the pursuit of "oneness". Before the school consolidations, bussing, and Dept. Of Education. When communities controlled the education of our children bereft of Federal interference. Most people today can't even relate to the concept of a one-room schoolhouse. More was learned there than reading, writing, and arithmetic. Growing up around others from all ages taught lessons to the young and old alike. The teachers lived in the community, and there were no secrets or hidden agendas. Parents were as involved as their children. Growing up taught these children the true meaning of community. Everything was out in the open for all to see and understand. The only differentiations were those of age and size. Economic status was soon revealed. Type/size/existence of lunches, condition of clothes, and presence of shoes were recognized. Others would compensate by lending a hand anyway they could. Some brought an "extra" sandwich, some brought outgrown clothes, and outgrown shoes. Nobody cared about the color of your skin. We were all in "it" together. We helped each other, and learned how community worked for when we were old enough to participate. We grew up knowing those we'd be associating with for our adult years. It was family, and we functioned as a unit from an early age through our elderly years. No, it didn't take a "village", it took the knowledge gained in places like this that can only be learned from participation. When these students became police, fire, council, businessmen, nurses, etc., they all had previous knowledge of their purview, and continued to work towards the betterment of their communities. When all else seems to be failing, it's never too late to return to the foundations of our building. Remember, "Always go home with the one you brought to the dance". Respect, honor, loyalty, responsibility, integrity, morals. Works for me !
