Time to clear the air. Y'all be thinkin' us country folk be backward because we got outhouses. WHEN your power and water quit for whatever reason, MINE still works. Yours builds up a stank that'd kill a maggot, mine don't if'n it's built right. Those of you that buy chamber pots for potted plants ain't never had to "go" in a rainstorm, have you? I know, y'all watch all them Sunday morning talk shows, and think you're educated beyond us country folks. We know. We sit on our porches sippin' sweet tea or whatever, and watch when a "newbie" moves in that knows it all. They either spend around $8k for a permit, septic tank, drain field, tile line, and labor or they'll ask a local for tips. Smart. Instead? They "figure it out" on their own, with QUITE hilarious ramifications. No biggie. It's their life. We don't/won't interfere. We're funny that way in the South. That's why we don't tolerate fools. 'Specially 'round our kids and family. Bad business, there ! For those who realize they aren't smarter than a sixth grader down here, here's some things to ponder on. DOWNHILL is imperative. From the house, root cellar, and storm shelter. Aside from the obvious repercussions of leaching, if you gotta go real bad, downhill is quicker and easier than uphill. Downhill from the well is VERY important, for very distasteful results if'n it ain't. Distance is important, too, and upwind is better than downwind. Tight fitting door and screened vents are VERY important. Chamber pots make your life easy at night, and not for plants. There's a certain etiquette associated with helping the elderly, too. Not to mention confidentiality. If it's your first trip and there's no store bought'n fancy paper in there, only a catalog, remember the cardinal rule! Leave the underwear ads alone, both men and wimmen! Swimsuits and negligys, too! Yes, the hole's 3&1/2 X 3&1/2 by at least 5' deep, to keep the smell down. It's cooler down there. In CERTAIN CASES, cribbage MAY be required. No, they don't fill up, either. This ain't no cr$p. Livin' rural takes brains you might not got. ALWAYS ask locals. They then realize how smart you really are. Or not. Lol, works for us either way !
