Shikoro.The neck-guard around the base of a samurai helmet (kabuto) is called the "shikoro". Consisting of three to six lacquered rings of steel held together by silk, cotton (asa) or leather lacing. The lacing helps the steel rings to collapse in a concertina like fashion, allowing full head movement while protecting the vulnerable neck area.
