National Vietnam War Veterans DayThe Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed into law by 45th U.S. President Donald J. Trump, designating every March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.To all my brothers and sisters who served before me, those who came home to be spat upon, treated with derision, called "baby killers" and generally treated as though they were less than human I say “Welcome Home”.To those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, who had their names engraved on a Wall of Honor, a Wall that cried out "Here lies honored dead, if only by their family and their brothers in arms" and at the same time "Shame! Shame on America for turning its back on those who served, treating them with disrespect" I say “You the living survivors, we will never forget you or the price you paid.”To the families of those who served and came back wounded in body, or mind, or spirit, or all three, who dealt with those hurting souls, I say “Thank you for caring.”And to all of us old men and women, who waited so long to receive true recognition of your sacrifice, I say again “Welcome Home, Brother! Welcome Home Sister!” You are part of a long line, extending backwards to the beginnings of our country, extending forward to Iraq, Afghanistan, and wherever next we take up arms.We swore an oath that goes something like this:"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."Something many who never wore the uniform will not understand is this. There is no expiration date on that oath.
