Courtesy of Working The Plants in Trona. The "Charlie" atomic bomb test at Yucca Flats, Nevada on April 22, 1952 drew Searles Valley residents out in large numbers. The Pioneer Point hill was a popular viewing spot where the explosion appeared as a dark orange-red flash just over the top of the Panamints. No sound could be detected after the blast. Larry Fox drove over to Aguereberry Point to witness the event and take pictures. George and Mildred Lucas along with George McMullen drove east of Lathrop Wells to watch. Lucas estimated they were approximately 18 miles from the test site. One unidentified observer from Trona climbed Argus Peak. He chose to remain "unidentified" because he was trespassing on NOTS property.
