Hooverville's also known as Shanty towns, sprouted up all over the US during the 1930's and lasted well into the 40's. Many of them, like this one in Seattle, had a post office and a church. Many of them did not allow women or children, but it was rarely enforced.

The longest lasting Hooverville, located in Seattle, Washington, stood as a semi-autonomous community from 1931 to 1941. It had its own post office and church. Women and children we not allowed, (but some were there.)
