Front and CentreDear David,You’d think the woke elites would pick their battles.But watching them use both the floods in Australia and war in Ukraine to bolster their weak climate change arguments was just laughable.According to the Greens, Queensland and NSW were all but begging for the floods by not shutting down their coal and gas industries.To them it’s not a natural disaster, it’s a “climate catastrophe”.Greens leader Adam Bandt reckons “we’ll suffer more fires and flooding if warming exceeds 1.5 degrees. We MUST get out of coal and gas”.Greens senator for Queensland Larissa Waters said, “as climate change accelerates, periods of intensive and sudden rainfall like this will become more and more common”.All while Australians lost their lives and tens of thousands of families lost everything.Of course, as bad as these floods are, they’re nothing new to the men and women of the Australian bush.These tragedies have been part of our lives since Australia was settled.No wonder that Dorothea Mackellar, in her famous patriotic poem ‘My Country’, wrote that she loved our land of “droughts and flooding rains”.That’s just the way our country is.“Always was, always will be,” as the wokesters say.But what’s even worse is the climate hysteria and virtue signalling after Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.Climate elitist Mike Cannon-Brookes said “make renewables not war”, which he reckoned was a “beautiful, simple, clear turn of phrase”.He said the attack on Ukraine was “a reminder [that] as petrol, gas and coal prices soar due to a horrible war… the price of the sunshine and wind powering 30 per cent of our grid and all our electric vehicles… hasn’t changed. It’s still a $0 cost input. Energy independence comes from renewable abundance.”Energy independence actually comes from reliable coal, gas and nuclear-fired base load power.We must learn the lesson Western Europe is learning the hard way.It was the European Union’s pathetic obsession with weather-dependent solar panels and wind turbines that gave Putin the confidence to roll his tanks across the Ukrainian border.About 40 per cent of Europe’s gas comes from his regime. Meanwhile, European nations have been turning off coal-fired generation and shutting down nuclear power plants.But it’s not too late for Australia.We just have to keep our energy grid out of the hands of woke politicians, social media virtue signallers and the inner-city elites.Matthew SheahanExecutive DirectorADVANCEP.S.
