A Longsword, early XVth century-ishCommission work.Spring steel blade of type XVII, and blued mild steel fittings. At the base of the blade there’s a rather long ricasso, with two shallow fullers running on each side of the blacked central flat. The latter is also inlaid with the motto “Droit” in early XVth century letters, and in fine silver. The pommel also sports a coat of arms of sable, three combs argent - both this one here and on the scabbard throat were hand-made by the talented Steeve Mauclert in silver and enamel. A recess was hand-forged in the pommel to accommodate it smugly. The grip is flax thread over wooden core, wrapped in leather, and a certain amount of hide glue. The scabbard is leather over wooden core, and was given fine silver throat and chape consistant with an English style of the very early XVth century - some time about 1415, go figure…The general silhouette of the sword is itself a combination of several models that the customer fancied, mostly IX.16 from the Royal Armouries, but also the one on the previous page in Oakeshott’s “records”, and the pommel comes from Oakeshott’s XVII.11 ; while the grip was inspired by sword A.89 of the Viennese Imperial Armouries.OAL 1184 mm, blade is 918 mm.Weight is 1370 g, PoB is 1 cm after the inlay. Sword and scabbard are 1635 g total.I learned a lot making this sword. I hope you will find it satisfying, and that it will serve well the purpose it was given. Stay safe, fiends !Edited : added some details and dimensions.
