Sengoku period warrior, daimyo Sengoku Hidehisa was born 470 years ago today, February 20, 1552.Sengoku Hidehisa was born in Kuroiwa, Mino Province (Modern-day Sakahogi-cho, Gifu Prefecture) in 1552. He served the Saito clan of Mino as a low ranking samurai, and was captured when Oda Nobunaga’s forces attacked and destroyed the Saito. From then he joined the Oda army, and served under Nobunaga’s general, Toyotomi Hideyoshi.Proving his worth in battle time and again, he was rapidly promoted, and in 1581, awarded Sumoto Castle, becoming the daimyo of Awaji Domain, however, in 1585, during the subjugation of Kyushu alongside the Chosokabe and Sogo clans, he was accused to advancing too quickly, and retreating at the first sign of trouble. For this, Hideyoshi stripped him of his fief and his title and sent him into exile. He proved his worth yet again in 1590, when Tokugawa Ieyasu offered him a position within the Tokugawa ranks during the Siege of Odawara. Following the siege, Sengoku Hidehisa was again made daimyo status, awarded Komoro Castle. Thankful for the opportunity to bounce back, he was quick to ally himself with the Tokugawa forces when the nation spilt into two factions at the time of the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600.However things would not go well.Hidehisa served under Tokugawa Ieyasu’s son and heir, Tokugawa Hidetada. That army was to take the Nakasendo route through the mountains to Sekigahara, but were stalled when attacking Ueda Castle and the father and son team of Sanada Masayuki and Nobushige. When Tokugawa Hidetada’s army eventually arrived at Sekigahara, the battle had ended, and Ieyasu was furious. Sengoku Hidehisa pleaded with his lord, Ieyasu, not to disinherit Hidetada. Eventually, Ieyasu forgave them both, and Hidetada, who would become the second Shogun, was forever grateful to Hidehisa, who died in 1614.
