THE HEROES Chronicles of the Warriors
[Minamoto Yoshitsune, the most popular hero]
One night, young Ushiwakamaru (childhood name of Yoshitsune) approaches Gojō Bridge in Kyoto, where the naginata wielding warrior monk Benkei challenges him to a duel.
Benkei eventually conceded and became loyal follower of Yoshitsune.
Little did the two know that they were fated to be constant companions from the onset of the Genpei Wars to the end of their life which led them to present-day Iwate Prefecture.
Legends about Yoshitsune and Benkei can be found throughout all of Japan!
This exhibition features many musha-e and tsuba (sword guard) related to stories of their exploits.
Gaze at scenes like "Jumping Over Eight Boats" depicting the Battle of Dannoura (1185), the Ataka-no-Seki barrier that appears in Kabuki play “Kanjinchō”, and many other famous episodes!
They were the inspiration for much popular entertainment of the time, and are stories still loved to this day.
