Bitchu Kokubun-ji Temple was built during the Nara period (710 - 794) by order of Emperor Shomu. It is said that the temple was meant to protect the country from natural disasters and famine with the power of Buddhism.Within the temple precinct, you'll find a 34-meter-high five-story pagoda, a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan. The current structure is a reconstruction from the mid-Edo period (1603-1867) but it hasn't lost any of its original, imposing beauty.
