How do we fix our public schools? We have heard the ideas of politicians, movie stars, TV news anchors, and various so-called “experts.” Most of those people have zero teaching experience, yet many of their ideas have been tried over the past decades. None of them have worked. Meanwhile, our schools continue falling farther behind the rest of the world.

Now this may sound crazy, but isn’t it about time we tried listening to a teacher who has actually been in the classroom and has a long, broad, hands-on perspective of the changes made in our schools during the last 70 years?

Darrell Horton was born after World War II, was educated in public schools in the 1950s and 1960s, and started teaching in 1971. He has taught all levels from kindergarten through twelfth grade, spending the last twenty years of his career as a specialist teacher in one of the country’s larger school districts. He has been in the trenches, face to face with thousands of students from all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. This gives him a unique perspective on how and why our schools have failed. How do we fix our public schools? His answers may surprise you.
