On this day: 50 years ago, the Lockheed S-3 Viking, Navy’s four-seat, twin-engine turbofan-powered anti-submarine, anti-ship strike, and aerial refuelling aircraft made its first flight (January 21, 1972). The Viking represented a voluminous, comparatively long endurance platform that had incredible potential for re-fitting and growth and provided outstanding service to the Navy throughout the 80s and 90s.
