A USN Tomcat pilot requested clearance for take off, ATC advised him to hold short due to traffic. After repeated impatient requests by the F-14D to depart, ATC jokingly stated that if able to reach 14,000ft within half the runway length, he could take off. To ATC's surprise the F-14 driver quickly acknowledged the instruction and applied full burners. Halfway down the active, the Tomcat went vertical until reaching 14,000ft. The ATC had no option than to hand the pilot over to departure, and wish him a nice day.
