In healthcare, we have a form called an Against Medical Advice (AMA). We have patients sign it when they refuse a drug, surgery, or treatment that goes against our medical advice. It informs them of all risks up to and including death for their refusal to follow our reccomendations. As a paramedic, I've had countless people sign this form when they refused to go to the hospital in a potentially harmful situation.
I don't force my patients to take their medicine or do what I say. They always have a right to refuse it, even if they know they will die without it.
This is what it means for a person to have autonomy. As an alert and competent adult you deserve to decide what does or doesn't happen to your body. It's my job to educate you about the risks and benefits. Regardless if I disagree with your choice, you still get to make the decision. This is what it means to practice ethical medicine.
