Yeah, like a lot of y'all, I love watching movies that are like these. I've always wondered why broadcast TV loves showing stupid horror movies, but not many like the ones we'd rather watch. I used to think it was related to possible gore, but with the advent of video games like GTA, etc., I don't think that's it. Besides, ANYBODY with an IQ higher than a stone knows there's atrocities in war, which is why they must be avoided unless there's no alternatives left. World history is replete with heroes of every stripe and genre, not just our nation. The thing I might've figured out is the after effects we fail to take into consideration. When our patriotism rises in our bosoms watching, the roller coaster effect sets in on some who consistently wind up comparing themselves to the ones they just watched and consider themselves failures by comparison. It's kinda like people my age eating a handful of M&M's an hour before bedtime just to get the crash after the sugar rush. There's not a person who doesn't ask themselves how they'd react given the same stimuli. That's where most people give up watching them over again. It's human nature.
Before you enter that self deprecating wormhole, however, take a moment to ask yourself a few things. Were Audie Murphy, William Wallace, Ben Martin, Joan of Arc, et al, born heroes? Was there something special in their DNA that you can put your finger on that demonstrates they were predestined for greatness? Think the Army knew Audie was going to be a hero, and that's why they signed him up? Balderdash ! Buffalo Bagels ! Each and every person who's now considered a hero started out just like the rest of us. At some point in time, they made a conscious decision to become different due to circumstances. We've all heard accounts of people having moments of super human strength, and the accounts of those who've simply decided they weren't going to accept status quo conditions for whatever reason. Most of us SHOULD be thankful we haven't been placed in the position to have to perform at that level, but we have the potential no matter what background or age you are. I'm not even going to bring up any hypotheticals, as just thinking about them causes my blood to boil. You know exactly what I'm saying.
Understand this. Anybody is capable at any time of doing any thing as long as the cause is just. Wishing won't do it. Dreaming won't do it. Watching how it's done in video games won't do it. Beating yourself up with fear with horror movies won't do it. It takes a complete revulsion of acceptance of what's going on to cause a person to make the conscious decision to put an end to whatever situation is at hand no matter the consequences. THAT'S when watching movies like these come into play. You instantly become one with the participants, and a clear understanding is finally reached. Then, and only then, will you know how you'll perform when THAT time comes, be what it may. No, a bell doesn't ring when you've given it all you've got, so don't hold back waiting for one to. Many have actually not even remembered what/how they did at the time. They remember what occured before, and sometimes after, but not everything. With that understanding, how could you even begin to believe you know what you're capable of? Calm down, relax, and be thankful you don't know. If you do, you're already relaxed. You know.
You were born for greatness, and we're different for different situations. Just be the best you you can be, and the rest will be added unto you. Believe.
