On this day: 42 years ago, the dedicate interceptor version of the swing-wing Panavia Tornado made its maiden flight (October 27, 1979). Designated Panavia Tornado ADV (short for Air Defence Variant), the aircraft entered service with the RAF in 1986, and was phased out in 2011.
