As Israel faced the prospect of defeat in the opening days of the 1973 October War, a squadron of IDF/AF F-4 Phantoms was loaded with 13 20-kiloton nuclear bombs for the “ultimate” strike. It is widely believed that this specter of nuclear escalation led the Nixon administration to act firm and fast to provide Israel with the most massive weapons airlift (Operation Nickel Grass) in history.
