The battleship USS Arizona on Dec. 25, 1916, photographed from the Manhattan Bridge on the East River in New York City.was a battleship of the United States Navy , the class Pennsylvania . It was the third ship to honor the 48th state of the Union . Built in 1916 , it came into action in World War I and again in World War II in 1941 , when it was bombed by the Japanese . The attack on Pearl Harbor , where the ship was docked, was one of the factors that led the United States to war.It was sunk by Japanese military planes during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, where 1 177 men died when a bomb penetrated the ammunition magazine located in the forward artillery turrets. Some bodies were recovered, but the remains of 900 crew were never recovered, lying under the sea.
