On this day: 56 years ago, company test pilot John Conrad made the maiden flight of the LTV A-7 Corsair II (September 26,1965). Affectedly known as the "SLUF" (Short Little Ugly F*****) the A-7 became one of leading attack aircraft of the 1970s and 80s.
