Living rural has benefits beyond the seen sometimes. I've never wanted to pay for television. There's no cable out here. Internet streaming, yes, but $. Satellite TV? Yes, but $. Over the air is free, but since TV changed to digital, reception range has been cut in half. Some days, out of 59 channels, we only receive one. When it's one of "those types", rather than subject ourselves to their drivel and the commercials of companies who apparently support them, we put in a DVD and enjoy. I pray everybody who read that last sentence who works in the propaganda industry or funds them with advertising dollars understands what I said. Companies who advertise with them are wasting their money on me, and IF I saw them , I wouldn't support their products. The vast majority of the time, we're watching GET TV, Cozi, StartTV, MeTV, or Antenna TV. Yeah, we see a lot of ambulance chasers, but even THEY'RE better for supporting decent programs with wholesome messaging and lessons in morality. The Big Six corporations that control most of the rest only sensationalize everything and hype things for their own benefit.
How can things be changed? Follow my thoughts. When viewership drops on networks, their advertising costs need to be lessened in order to attract business. Advertisers want the most bang for their buck, and seek the stations with the largest audience share. When the ratings drop everywhere, the advertisers will start looking for other avenues. If this started happening in all their markets, they'd have to actually start listening to their viewership instead of ignoring us. Once again, the greed and lust for money is the only thing they understand. It's very interesting that I've never seen a Subway ad during Gunsmoke, Bonanza, or Little House on the Prairie. It would appear that the "woke" corporations haven't woken up enough to understand we'd prefer those types of programming over the insidious garbage the Big Six perpetrate. Coupled with the clearly slanted news they broadcast, they're a bane to our society. Now, they're salivating with the prospect of political ad monies and the subsequent divisions that always attracts. The result? MORE attack ads !
I'm so thankful I'm not one of those who actually pay for the priveledge of being insulted in my own home. Movies? I stopped watching those a long time ago. I buy what I want on DVD, and sit back comfortably with whatever snacks and beverages I choose. I can pause it to go to the bathroom, and wear what I choose. I can talk to my family about the movie. I can reverse it if I want. I bought a Sony home theatre sound system, and I can CRANK it ! Even my windows rattle when I blast "Danger Zone" on Top Gun. Yeah, I enjoy Fiddler on the Roof, and The King and I with Topol and Yul Brynner. All the other good ones with John Wayne. Second-hand Lions. Then, I can watch them over and over again. Totally commercial free, and government forced drivel nowhere to be found. We buy series like Miami Vice and All Star Treks. I'm told that as I continue to get older I'm only going to need one because I'll forget about it in between viewings, though I'm not there yet. EBay still has plenty, and they're great.
Meanwhile, it's time for "Touched By An Angel". Infinitely better than that 'view' thingie I've heard about. Wonder who advertises on THAT !

We do the free air TV also. It sure beats what all of the paid TV offers, and the awful commercials. We watch some programs over and over because they are real good and then we find some programs we have never seen or it’s been a while since we did. You hit the nail on the head with this post.
