Kamishimo (ancient ceremonial dress) is a kind of formal kimono (traditional Japanese clothing) for men. It usually consists of kataginu (short sleeveless dress made from hemp) and hakama (plucked and split skirt made into thin strips) made from the same fabric, and is worn over a kosode (short sleeves; the standard size of nowadays of kimono). A kataginu has the family vest placed in 4 places; namely, the back, both sides of the chest and the koshiita (waist). During the Edo period, it was considered the most formal attire of the samurai without position, because many people with status also followed this practice, it is still used in traditional Japanese theatre and festival and so on.
