BE LIKE A DOG Today's OT reading for Daily Mass is the story of the spies sent to scout out the Promised Land in Numbers chapter 13, and the Gospel reading is the story of the Canaanite woman from whose daughter Jesus had exorcised a demon. In the OT reading only Caleb (whose name means dog in Hebrew) and Joshua (whose name means Yahweh saves) had faith that the Promised Land could be taken. In the Gospel reading only a woman whom Jesus compared to a dog had faith that her daughter could be healed. In both cases dogs were regarded as unclean under the Mosaic Law, yet in both cases only people who were like dogs had the faith that God demands of us. The clean people, the choosen people, the beautiful people, the well-off and cutured people did not have such faith. Lesson to be learned: be like a dog.
