Timeline Kamakura Period (1185-1333)1185: Victory of the Minamoto clan over the Taira clan and end of the Genpei War with the disappearance of young Emperor Antoku at the Battle of Dan No Ura.1191: Introduction of the Zen cult in Japan.1192: Yoritomo Minamoto becomes Japan's first permanent Shogun. He set up his camp in Kamakura away from Kyoto court. It sets out the first rules of the Japanese Bushi.1199: Yoritomo Minamoto dies. His estate passes to the hands of the Regents Hoj ô. Start of government by the Shikken (Regents).1219: Sanetomo Minamoto, last shogun of the bloodline is assassinated.1221: Emperor Go-Toba tries to regain power from the Samurans. Bushis clans united behind Masako Hojo prevent him from succeeding. The power remains in the Samurai.1232: The Hoj ô clan that governs the country, edits Joei Shikimoku, a code of laws that apply to all people of Japan and therefore to the Bushi.1253: Creation of the school of S ûttra du Lotus by Nichiren.1274: First attempt at Mongolian invasion. The invader's fleet is decimated by a storm and must withdraw. Important changes in Samurai tactics after contact with Mongols.1281: Second attempt at Mongolian invasion, with a much bigger army. Important fighting on land and on the sea. Second welfare typhoon.1302: Great Kamakura Fire. Over 500 dead.1318: Go Daigo becomes the 96th Emperor of Japan.
