Doing your own research means critically evaluating the arguments that reference the research, not re-doing the research itself. The core problem with this whole issue is that there are a ton of people who think citing research is a substitute for formulating an argument. It never has been and it never will be. Science is fundamentally descriptive, not prescriptive. It explains how things work, not what you should do about it, and suggesting otherwise is intellectually dishonest.
