The brass squares in the image are called Stolperstein, or "Stumbling Stones" in English. The were invented by Gunter Demnig. His purpose is to mark the last known living or work address of Jews killed in the holocaust. He embeds one of these stones in the sidewalk close to their home or place of business. The brass stones reveal the following information about a person; 1.Here lived Max Fischer, 2. Birth year, 3. Expelled from his home on the 28th of October, 1938 to Poland, 4. Shot and killed in 1942 at the Krakow concentration camp. His wife Jaha experienced the same fate. These were 2 of 8 Stolperstein that were outside my apartment in Berlin. I saw them every day. There are Stolperstein in 23 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. Believe me when I tell you that seeing these in person, stamps an unforgettable impression in your mind about how important it is to be FREE.
