Despite the continued interest from the USMC in acquiring the AH-64 Apache, funding constraints made that impossible. The backup plan was the rebuilding of the AH-1W Super Cobra fleet into the AH-1Z version named the ‘Viper ’ seen here. An external spotting feature of the ‘Z ’ model is the new ball-shaped AN/AAQ -30 Hawkeye Target Sight System (TSS) at the fuselage nose.
