Sohei (translated from Japanese, meaning ′′ warrior monk ′′) were Buddhist monks who fought in Feudal Japan. At certain times, they gained considerable power within Japan, even having a great influence on the imperial government. They were similar to the Yamabushi, the mountain ascetic, but unlike the yamabushi loners, they were usually organized into large armies.
