Have you ever heard the statement "Those who have nothing have nothing to lose"? THAT'S precisely what the impetus is for an action such as this. I don't know the year, but it happened during the week before Memorial Day in Kentucky. While most people question why, there's those of us that KNOW why. Bluntly? They're hedonistic, uneducated narcissistic dolts seeking fame at the expense of others. The types that think Audie Murphy was the star in Beverly Hills Cop and didn't think he was a Vet. The kind that when you ask them to name ONE posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor recipient ask " what's posthumous mean"? They walk among us, breed, and complain about their travails. Bereft of understanding total sacrifice for one's own nation, they act like it's all something from a video game that can be recycled and started over on with a whim. They celebrate their victories and get mad at the losses, yet hit that reset button and start all over again. They're actually convinced that they know everything about war due to that silly little game thingie.
Growing up, children need mentors. For most of us, it begins with our parents. Through them, we discover what a real hero is and what a failure is. Yes, my father served in the Navy during WWII, enlisting right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. I learned many things from him, both about life and death. I learned respect and admiration for people that did extraordinary feats, both in the military and civilian worlds. I went seven years straight without missing one day of Sunday school. We didn't revere sports figures or actors/actresses back then. We respected those who performed, from the school janitor who always treated us like we were his best friends to the President of the USA. Senior military officers and police were respected and astonishing to us. We knew who we were, and what we were supposed to do. Our society hadn't lost the cohesion of a nuclear family at that point. We still had family picnics/get togethers every Sunday afternoon, and when we celebrated a holiday, it was explained to us until we understood it's purpose.
It doesn't really matter what brought us to this dance of insanity in search of fulfilling everybody's desires, rather the simple understanding that that's impossible. Disobeying laws and their enforcers is madness, and a direct challenge to good order and discipline. It's an action that demonstrates one's belief that they're above anybody else. To me, they've anointed themselves God in their own world. Since we know that no one can serve two masters, they automatically reject authority and sacrifice of others to pursue their own Nirvana. In times of questioning, drugs or alcohol or both carry them through to the next chapter. They can't even qualify for military service due to education, arrest records, or drug use. They stay here, breeding a new society of themselves, while our most able bodied go off to war and don't come back a lot of the time. Any respect for their service or accomplishments must be met with this kind of anger over the perception of denigration of themselves by others. The fact that respect for their sacrifice SHOULD be extended so they can continue their ludicrous behaviour is lost on them, just as much as it's lost to themselves.
Again, education is the key. TEACH your children what this holiday is about. It's not about the bbqing, either. If not, this aberrant type of behaviour will continue !
