Pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer, has faced thousands of lawsuits. It has also set a record for the largest fine ($2.3 billion) paid for a healthcare fraud lawsuit. What was it for? Illegal marketing claims.
Here are a few of Pfizer's other shining moments throughout recent history...
1996- conducts illegal/unapproved clinical trial on meningitis in 200 children in Nigeria. 11 children died as a result of the trial and dozens more disabled. In 2011, $700,000 was paid to 4 of the families whose children died and a $35 million fund was set up for those adversely affected.
2012- settled claims totalling over $1 billion related to side effects (breast cancer) from their hormone replacement drug, Prempro
2013- paid $288 million for cases of side effects (suicidal thoughts) related to their smoking cessation drug, Chantix.
2013- agreed to pay $55 million to settle criminal charges related to their drug Protonix.
2014- recalls lots of Effexor XR when it is discovered to be contaminated with another drug the company manufactures, Tikosyn. This combination of drugs can result in death.
There have been thousands upon thousands of lawsuits, many settled quietly, many more dismissed, and likely twice as many injuries and deaths have occurred as a result of this entity than has even been reported. The pharmaceutical industry has deep pockets and they know who to rub shoulders with to avoid real accountability. They own the media. They own the institutions. They own the politicians and judges. And they can pretty much do what they want because nobody will stop them and their endless flow of profits keeps them untouchable.
Pfizer is currently using their astronomically priced drug, Vyndaqel, as the catalyst for seeking reversal of some pretty major laws. Laws that prevent kickbacks. Of course, that's not the language they use in their lawsuit, but reading between the lines, it becomes quite evident what their goal is. And this strategic move to overturn the antikickback laws prior to the approval of their covid vaccine, which they're touting a 90% efficacy rate for, after mere months of development, is telling.
I don't know about you, but based on their track record I think I'll keep my hands out of the Pfizer cookie jar. Health isn't found in pharmaceuticals.
