During the 1950s most observers believed that aerial warfare of the future would be a matter of being in the right part of the sky at the right time, pushing a button and leaving the missiles to do the rest. The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, designed to be armed solely with air-to-air missiles, epitomized this thinking.
