On this date in 1961, USS Kitty Hawk (CVA 63) was commissioned in Philadelphia. Seen here the following September refueling destroyers USS McKean (DDR 784), right, and USS Harry E. Hubbard (DD 748) in the Pacific en route to a first U.S. 7th Fleet deployment, Kitty Hawk spent most of her 48 years of service based in Pacific Fleet before decommissioning in 2009.
