One of my latest projects is called Hedwig. It's basically a virtual reality headset which I'm modifying to be night-vision goggles. The Raspberry Pi 3A+ has a smaller form factor which just fits inside the case. Inside will go an older iPhone 5 which will be dedicated to the project.
I've received in the infrared LEDs which will be mounted on the outside, facing forward. The Raspberry Pi NoIR camera will also be mounted forward. The name is a little confusing. In this case "no IR" means that there isn't an infrared filter which means that it is happy with the infrared range.
The Raspberry then provides a wifi hotspot and a website which the iPhone connects to. The video received from the camera is then doubled and sent to the website client in fullscreen mode. Each eye then gets a copy of the infrared-illuminated scene in realtime.
