In 1993, Russia tried to settle a debt for New Zealand dairy products by offering tanks, MiGs and a nuclear sub. With a nuclear-free stance and no need for old Russian weapons, the Kiwis declined. In 1989, the Soviets had managed to use 17 subs, a cruiser, a destroyer and a frigate to pay a debt they owed Pepsi.
