#OTD in 1945, the Japanese battleship Yamato was sunk by U.S. carrier-based aircraft. When one of Yamato's magazines detonated as the ship capsized, the resulting mushroom cloud reached 3.7 miles high.
With 18.1" guns, Yamato and sister ship Musashi were the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever constructed. Musashi was sunk by U.S. Navy pilots during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944.
