in 1960 USS Kearsarge (CV 33) rescues four Russian soldiers from their landing craft 1,000 miles from Midway Island, which had been drifting several weeks after their engine failed off the Kamchatka Peninsula.
After participating in South East Asian Treaty Organization (SEATO) exercises and Seventh Fleet operations, Kearsarge cleared Yokosuka for the homeward voyage on March 3, 1960. Three days later in stormy waters, she rescued four Soviets after they drifted for 49 days in a disabled landing craft. They were flown back to their country after Kearsarge arrived at NAS Alameda, California on March 15th.
