Springtime In TexasTh' dull drab days of winter finally gone, as green again covers th' ground,Happy smiles an' sweet sentiments exchanged, as old acquaintances are found.Th' essence of new life is widespread, bloomin' fruit trees circlin' every home,New crops arisin' in verdant fields, an' warmth has returned to th' loam.Pastures once again full of life, as cows graze to nurse new arrivals,While mares follow frolickin' foals, an' perennial flowers announce their revivals.An' across th' fertile Texas hill country, erupts a carpet of bluebonnet blue,Where longhorn cattle take a nap, as they their cud they chew.Cowboys ride through brush pastures, see whitetail fawns an' does,First hatches of bob an' blue quail, an' colorful flower shows.Spring rains reveal new land, fill lakes an' rivers an' streams,Channels, blues, an' yellow catfish, fulfill a trotliner's dreams.Largemouth, smallmouth, crappies, an' bream, no matter th' age an anglers delight, Some go straight to th' cast iron skillet, cracker meal, spices an' peanut oil just right.Down in th' warm tropical valley, with palm trees wavin' in th' breeze,Tropical birds along th' resacas, an' retirees takin' their ease.Th' Gulf an' bays give of their bounty, fresh shrimp, oysters an' blue crab,Sea trout an' fightin' big Reds, th' saltwater colors not drab.Migratory birds flyin' back north, away from th' warm Texas clime,To hatch an' raise their young'uns, an' return at a later time.Way up north on th' Oklahoma line, across th' grasslands baby antelope play,Stretchin' their legs in mock races, as prairie dogs scamper away.Pheasants nest in th' fence rows, well camoed down under briars,Hopin' to hatch off a clutch of eggs, while hawks wait on overhead wires.Everywhere songbirds abound, everywhere a mixture of song,As they gather sticks an' straw for nests, busy th' whole day long.God's wonders so proudly displayed, as Texans an' friends drive about,Across our great an' grand Lone Star State, these wondrous beauties we all tout.Andy G.
