USS Kearsarge (CV 33), pictured here being overflown by a pair of A-4 Skyhawks in August 1964, was commissioned #OTD in 1946. Like many Essex-class carriers, she ended up serving as an antisubmarine warfare carrier and in this capacity participated in astronaut recoveries in the early part of America's manned space program.
