If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor, and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
Ane now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

E se avessi il dono della profezia
e conoscessi tutti i misteri e tutta la scienza,

Un pio sacerdote, figlio spirituale del Padre e da lui tanto amato, mi esortò a scrivere i ricordi della mia vita. É tanto misera e povera la mia vita che non merita ricordarla. Scriverò qualche ricordo in cui entra il mio padre spirituale Padre Pio da Pietrelcina, che tanto mi ha amata in Dio, e tanto ha sofferto per rigenerarmi a Gesù.
Dirò quel che Dio e il Padre hanno fatto per l'anima mia, quel che mi consigliava nelle confessioni. Accennerò alle sue sofferenze, alle sue grandezze spirituali, per quel che mi era dato di intendere. Dirò, insomma, quel che ho visto e sentito da lui.
Dato che, per bontà di Dio, quasi tutti i superiori mi permettevano di baciare ogni giorno la mano al Padre, avevo modo di rivolgergli qualche domanda spirituale e ricevere la sua risposta. Tutto riportavo sul mio diario. Questo favore divino durò fino alla vigilia della sua scomparsa per il paradiso.
Alcune di queste domande e risposte le riporterò su questo quaderno, perché possano servire al bene spirituale di qualche anima ben disposta a profittarne più di me.
Avendo sempre presente la persona del Padre, pensavo a gustare la soavità del suo spirito, il suo amore divino, l’affascinante bellezza del suo animo che traspariva dal suo volto di paradiso, e poca importanza davo alle sue parole. Oggi, rileggendole le apprezzo, e ne scopro tutto il valore spirituale.
Le rileggo e piango, perché in esse rivedo tutto l’animo del grande santo, del dolce Gesù visibile. Piango perché non ho messo in pratica i suoi insegnamenti, perché non ho corrisposto a tanta sua predilezione, alla tenerezza del suo stragrande amore materno.
Capitolo I
Nacqui nell’anno, nel mese e nel giorno in cui Padre Pio fece la sua professione religiosa: il 22 gennaio 1904.
Il Padre mi diceva che soffrì tanto per strapparmi al mondo e donarmi a Gesù. In verità avevo una naturale avversione e ripugnanza a tutto ciò che era mondo, ma satana sa bene l’arte di far cadere nel fango anche chi vive nella solitudine della clausura e degli eremi, e si serve delle creature maliziose per far cadere nella sua rete gli incauti e gli innocenti.
Mia madre rigorosamente mi sorvegliava. Non voleva che sostassi sulla soglia di casa o sul balcone, né che facessi amicizia con le ragazze del vicinato, né che uscissi in piazza. Esagerazione, direbbe la gente oggi. Eppure non una volta sola incontrai satana in persona, ma tante volte. S’insinuava, il maligno, anche per mezzo delle compagne di scuola, che ne sapevano di tutti i colori. E chi, se non il Padre, mi trasse sempre al largo, mi aiutò, mi liberò da tanti pericoli?
A tutti i costi voleva, satana, infondere nel mio cuore l’amore alla vanità, ai piaceri bassi, al male. Per riuscirci si servì di gente per bene, di parenti, di amiche, di occasionali confessori, di professori.
Ti esalterò e ti ringrazierò sempre, o Signore, perché per mezzo del Padre mi hai salvato e non hai fatto lieti i miei nemici sul conto mio.
La mamma era attenta a sorvegliarmi, anche perché una pia veggente, tanto devota dell'Addolorata, le disse: «Tieni da conto quella figliuola, perché Dio ha i suoi disegni su di lei». Questa frase la sentii mentre passavo davanti a questa donna che parlava con la mamma presso il focolare. Finsi di non sentirla. Lei però mi guardava. Avevo sei o sette anni.
Il disegno di Dio era questo, io penso: il buon Dio mi aveva già affidata al Padre, il quale un giorno mi disse che ero presente nel suo spirito quando celebrò la prima Messa, il 10 agosto 1910. Di ciò ringrazio ogni mattina il Signore.
La mamma era molto buona e pia. Ogni mattina faceva la santa comunione nella chiesa dell’Addolorata. Aveva un fratello ché morì poco tempo prima di celebrare la santa Messa. Per questo conosceva un po’ la Sacra Scrittura, della quale mi narrava spesso gli episodi più belli. L’ascoltavo con tanta attenzione e piacere, anche con amore. Era per me come se mi avesse dato un dolce squisito. Per l’anima mia era come se avessi visto un po’ di cielo. Quel che mi affascinava era la bontà di Dio per le sue creature. Quei racconti materni non si cancellarono mai dalla mia mente.
Frequentai tutte le classi elementari, fino alla sesta. Della mia prima comunione ricordo solo che la feci sola, nella chiesa madre, senza vestito bianco, né velo. Ai piedi dell’altare di san Michele, in ginocchio, appoggiata a una sedia facevo il ringraziamento. Niente festa in casa.
In principio la mia famiglia viveva agiatamente, dopo cadde in una povertà che preoccupò tanto i miei genitori. Eravamo nove figli. Io ero la penultima. Quattro maschi morirono. Non conobbi i giorni della prosperità, del benessere e della santa letizia, ma solo quelli della miseria e della tribolazione che costrinsero il povero babbo a fare il garzone presso un fratello ricco.
Ne soffrì tanto la mamma, che era vissuta sempre nell’agiatezza. Suo padre era molto ricco e timorato di Dio, sua madre tutta carità verso i poveri. Soffriva non per lei, ma per i figli. Io, abituata a quel regime di vita povera, non ci soffrivo affatto. Soffrivo nel sentirla lamentarsi di notte per una dolorosa ulcera allo stomaco. I medici non sapevano suggerirle nessun rimedio.
A scuola ero molto ben voluta dalla maestra, che mi lodava sempre per la mia intelligenza e buona volontà. Alla fine del primo anno meritai il premio: una grande medaglia d’argento con il nastro tricolore. Me la doveva consegnare in pubblico il sindaco durante una festa. Gesù mi liberò dalla vanagloria, regalandomi, il giorno prima, una gran febbre e il morbillo.
Di tante piccole infermità si servì il Signore per liberarmi da mali morali.
La notte di Natale, all’età di cinque anni, caddi in un gran braciere acceso. Piccola ancora, mi spezzai le gambe. Per tanto tempo portai un apparecchio metallico, del quale, non so perché, mi vergognavo tanto.
Il fratello di mio padre era sacerdote. Mi chiamava sempre a casa sua per recitare con lui la novena all’Addolorata e altre preghiere. Nella sua camera aveva un crocifisso grande, molto bello. Quando lui andava in un’altra stanza per recitare l'ufficio, io, con la scusa di spolverarlo, lo staccavo dal muro, lo mettevo sul letto, lo contemplavo e mi deliziavo a baciarlo con tanto amore. Oh, come desideravo averne uno a casa mia! Dopo tanti anni il Padre mi permise di averne uno più grande di quello dello zio. Me lo benedisse in sacrestia, baciandolo ripetute volte. Mi ha fatto sempre buona compagnia. Gesù esaudiva tutti i miei buoni desideri.

A pious priest, a spiritual son of Father and much loved by him, urged me to write down the memories of my life. It is so miserable and poor my life that it is not worth remembering. I will write some recollections in which my spiritual father Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, who loved me so much in God, and suffered so much to regenerate me to Jesus, enters.
I will say what God and the Father did for my soul, what he advised me in confessions. I will mention his sufferings, his spiritual greatnesses, as far as I was given to understand. I will say, in short, what I saw and heard from him.
Since, by the goodness of God, almost all superiors allowed me to kiss Father's hand every day, I had a way to ask him a few spiritual questions and receive his answer. I would record everything in my diary. This divine favor lasted until the eve of his passing away to heaven.
Some of these questions and answers I will record in this notebook, so that they may serve the spiritual good of some soul well disposed to profit from them more than me.
Having Father's person always in mind, I thought about savoring the suavity of his spirit, his divine love, the fascinating beauty of his soul that shone through his heavenly countenance, and little importance I gave to his words. Today, rereading them I appreciate them, and discover their full spiritual value.
I reread them and weep, because in them I see again the whole soul of the great saint, the sweet visible Jesus. I weep because I have not put his teachings into practice, because I have not corresponded to so much of his predilection, to the tenderness of his overwhelming maternal love.
Chapter I
I was born in the year, month and day in which Padre Pio made his religious profession: January 22, 1904.
The Father told me that he suffered so much to tear me away from the world and give me to Jesus. In truth I had a natural aversion and repugnance to all that was worldly, but Satan knows well the art of making even those who live in the solitude of seclusion and hermitages fall into the mud, and he uses mischievous creatures to make the unwary and innocent fall into his net.
My mother strictly watched over me. She did not want me to pause on the doorstep or balcony, or befriend neighborhood girls, or go out into the square. Exaggeration, people would say today. Yet not once did I meet Satan himself, but many times. He crept in, the evil one, even through schoolmates, who knew all kinds of things. And who, if not the Father, always pulled me out of the way, helped me, delivered me from so many dangers?
At all costs he wanted, Satan, to instill in my heart the love of vanity, of low pleasures, of evil. To succeed he used good people, relatives, friends, occasional confessors, professors.
I will exalt you and thank you always, O Lord, because through the Father you saved me and did not make my enemies glad on my account.
My Mother was careful to watch over me, partly because a pious seer, so devoted to Our Lady of Sorrows, said to her, "Keep that little daughter in mind, for God has His designs on her." I heard this phrase as I passed this woman talking to Mother by the hearth. I pretended not to hear her. She was looking at me, however. I was six or seven years old.
God's plan was this, I think: the good Lord had already entrusted me to the Father, who one day told me that I was present in his spirit when he celebrated the first Mass, August 10, 1910. For that I thank the Lord every morning.
My Mother was very good and pious. Every morning she took holy communion in the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows. She had a brother who died shortly before he celebrated holy Mass. Because of this she knew a little bit of Holy Scripture, of which she often told me the most beautiful episodes. I listened to it with such attention and pleasure, even with love. It was for me as if she had given me an exquisite dessert. For my soul it was as if I had seen a bit of heaven. What fascinated me was God's goodness to His creatures. Those motherly tales never faded from my mind.
I attended all the elementary classes, up to the sixth grade. Of my first communion I only remember that I made it alone, in the mother church, without a white dress or veil. At the foot of St. Michael's altar, on my knees, leaning on a chair I was giving thanksgiving. No house party.
In the beginning my family lived comfortably, later they fell into poverty that worried my parents so much. We were nine children. I was the second to last. Four boys died. I did not know the days of prosperity, wealth and holy gladness, but only those of misery and tribulation that forced poor father to be a shop boy with a rich brother.
My Mother, who had always lived in affluence, suffered so much. Her father was very rich and God-fearing, her mother all charity toward the poor. She suffered not for her, but for her children. I, accustomed to that regimen of poor living, did not suffer there at all. I suffered hearing her complain at night about a painful stomach ulcer. The doctors could not suggest any remedy for it.
At school I was very well-liked by the teacher, who always praised me for my intelligence and good will. At the end of the first year I deserved the prize: a large silver medal with a tricolor ribbon. It was to be presented to me in public by the mayor during a celebration. Jesus freed me from vainglory by giving me, the day before, a great fever and measles.
Of many small infirmities the Lord used to deliver me from moral ills.
On Christmas night, at the age of five, I fell into a large burning brazier. Small still, I broke my legs. For a long time I wore a metal brace, of which, I don't know why, I was so ashamed.
My father's brother was a priest. He always called me to his house to recite with him the novena to Our Lady of Sorrows and other prayers. In his room he had a big crucifix, very beautiful. When he would go to another room to recite the office, I, with the excuse of dusting it, would take it off the wall, put it on the bed, contemplate it and delight in kissing it with so much love. Oh, how I longed to have one in my home! After so many years the Father allowed me to have one bigger than Uncle's. He blessed it for me in the sacristy, kissing it repeatedly. It always kept me good company. Jesus fulfilled all my good wishes.
