Probably not so much TV... but, Saturday Matinees at the local neighborhood movie house. (They had talent shows onstage, back then, at the movie matinee.)

Remember, the audience were children, not adults. It was a kiddie show for Saturday morning matinees... Also, cartoons were popular. (Some in color, with sound.)
