Heavenly Citizenship
The concept of citizenship is central to understanding our identity as Christians. The apostle Paul reminds us in Philippians 3:20, "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ." This powerful statement emphasizes that as believers, our true home is not of this world but in heaven. This heavenly citizenship shapes our values, priorities, and actions here on earth.
The Role of an Ambassador
An ambassador serves as an appointed diplomat, representing their home country in a foreign land. They carry the authority of their nation's leader and are tasked with the responsibility of advocating their home country's interests. Importantly, an ambassador must be a citizen of the country they represent and must have been officially appointed to their role.
In the spiritual realm, Paul considered himself an ambassador for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20; Ephesians 6:20). As such, he spoke with the authority of heaven. He extended this identity to all Christians, noting that each believer is a citizen of heaven. This citizenship is the foundational qualification for being an ambassador of heaven.
Living as Ambassadors for Christ
Being an ambassador for Christ means representing the Kingdom of heaven on earth. It involves sharing the Gospel and living in a way that reflects our heavenly citizenship. Matthew 6:19-21 encourages us to invest in eternity, storing up treasures in heaven rather than on earth. Our calling is to declare God’s Gospel to those who are not yet citizens of heaven.
If you are a Christian, you are not a citizen of this world trying to get to heaven; you are a citizen of heaven making your way through this world." This perspective shifts our focus from earthly concerns to eternal purposes, guiding us to live in a manner worthy of our heavenly calling.
Embracing Our Heavenly Mission
As ambassadors of heaven, it is crucial to embody the values and principles of our true home. Here are a few ways to embrace this mission:
Reflect Christ's Love: Demonstrate compassion, kindness, and grace in your interactions with others.
Share the Gospel: Actively seek opportunities to share the message of salvation with those around you.
Live with Integrity: Uphold honesty and ethical behavior, serving as a testament to your heavenly citizenship.
Seek Heavenly Guidance: Pray for wisdom and strength to represent the Kingdom of heaven effectively.
By embracing these practices, we can fulfill our role as ambassadors, making a meaningful impact in the world while preparing for our ultimate home in heaven.
If you are a Christian, you are not a citizen of this world trying to get to heaven; you are a citizen of heaven making your way through this world.
