If we only accept the parts of God's Word that make use feel good, we are not worshiping God, but ourselves.

7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. (Galatians 6:7-8, KJV)

The answer in part can be found in the teachings of Jesus Christ...
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matthew 7:13-14, KJV)
There are few who find the way that leads to life. Jesus wasn't just speaking of eternal life, but a way of living that promotes life as special and sacred. Christ modeled this way of living for all who wish to follow after Him.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (Matthew 7:22-23, KJV)

I am not there yet, but that is the finish line of the race of faith I am running.
Only by the blood of Christ and power of the Holy Spirit within me shall I finish this race.

22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? 23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. (1 Corinthians 10:22-23, KJV)

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but the love of the Lord is the fulfillment of wisdom.

23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, [or] the likeness of any [thing], which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee. 24 For the LORD thy God [is] a consuming fire, [even] a jealous God. 26 [Thou] blind Pharisee, cleanse first that [which is] within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead [men's] bones, and of all uncleanness. (Matthew 23:26-27, KJV).
Good works earn us nothing, but when they come from a spirit of humility and obedience to God, they are an outward evidence of the salvation being fulfilled within us. As James by the Holy Spirit said "Faith without works is dead"
