This results in a rise in crime for which the knee-jerk response is to impose (ridiculous) gun restrictions on law-abiding citizens.
When that (predictably) fails to reduce crime, invoke the military.
The nail in the coffin of freedom is when the citizenry (or at least those who rejected the gun grab effort) gets fed up and takes up arms in revolt.
