View MoreOn this day May 25, in ... 240 BC – First recorded nearby earth passage of Halley's Comet. 1085 – King Alfonso VI of Castile takes the Iberian city and province Toledo, back from the Moors (not to be confused with 'Moormons'). 1521 – Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, issues the Edict of Worms, declaring Martin Luther an outlaw (Not to be confused with Martin Luther King). 1659 – Richard Cromwell resigns as Lord Protector of England after serving 8 months. His father, Oliver Cromwell had served five years. 1660 – Exactly one year after Richard Cromwell's resignation, King Charles II lands at Dover at the invitation of the Convention Parliament, which marks the end of the Cromwell-proclaimed Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland and begins the Restoration of the British monarchy. 1738 – The war between Colonial Pennsylvania and Colonial Maryland ends with a treaty settlement of a boundary dispute and an exchange of prisoners. 1803 – Ralph Waldo Emerson, American poet and philosopher, is born. 1865 – In Mobile, Alabama, around 300 people are killed to death when an ordnance depot explodes. 1895 – Playwright, poet and novelist Oscar Wilde is convicted of being "wild and committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons" and - having gay sex. He is sentenced to serve two years in prison where he gets many opportunities to drop the soap in the shower. 1925 – Scopes Trial: John T. Scopes is indicted for teaching human evolution in Tennessee. He goes on to invent Scopes Mouthwash. Just kidding. 1961 – Apollo program: U.S. President John F. Kennedy announces in a speech before Congress, "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth." 1968 – The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, is dedicated as "Gateway to the West" and as a monument recognizing the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the city in 1764 by French fur traders during the reign of King Louis IX. 1977 – The movie "Star Wars" (retroactively titled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope) is released in theaters. 2001 – Erik Weihenmayer becomes the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest. 2008 – NASA's Phoenix lander touches down in the Green Valley region of Mars (not to be confused with the Green Valley, Arizona retirement community 20 miles south of Tucson) to search for environments suitable for water and microbial life. 2020 – George Floyd, a U.S. citizen of black African descent, and one with an incredibly long criminal record, is "shot to death by police" in Minneapolis, Minnesota, according to a Tweet made yesterday by the Washington Post. During his arrest he stops breathing while being restrained.
